既然要考博，那就面临着考哪个学校和考哪个导师的问题。在这中间，前一个问题，我考虑的不多，反倒是第二个问题，就是考谁的问题，是我比较重视的。我一向认为，一些大学青年教师考博功利化，也不是值得批评的行为，因为在目前高校的职称评定标准内，它对学历的要求就已经暗含了这种功利化的导向。
对我来说，也曾经有着稍微简便一点的路径，就是我的硕士生导师刚刚评为博导，寒暑假交流时的言辞之间，希望我读他的博士。可是我在那个学校待的时间太长了，想起要是再去读博，上的课、学的知识以及面对的老师，可能还是那些人，这就不太令人有学习的内动力了，所以换个学校读博是我一开始就坚持了的想法。
对于人文社会科学研究，我自己认为，大致有两种取向，一是生存性，二是使命性，具体含义看字面意思，大家就可以理解了，所以这里就不展开说了。对我自己来说，我更加喜欢站那种在真正的知识分子立场，像韦伯所说的那样把学术作为“志业”来从事的老师。
当然，上述两者兼顾做得好的，肯定也不是没有，只是本人不认识。此外，以前在工作的学校和一些理工科老师交流，言下之意就是你们文科老师就是耍嘴皮子的，没啥了不起的。这话一直让我很不服气，因为我认为我的学科在人文社会科学中从来都属于实证倾向比较浓厚的学科，所谓耍嘴皮子之说实乃世人一大误解。
当然，这样的偏见和我内心的不服气，潜移默化中也使我考博时比较倾向选择那些实证与应用倾向比较浓厚的学校。还有就是，由于我工作的学校虽然不在北京，但是离北京比较近，交通也比较方便，考虑到平时还要上班工作，而报考北京学校的博士，可以做到参加考试时不用单独请假，周末来回就可以，所以北京就成为我报考博士的地理首选。而通过上述三大原因的结合，实际已经暗中把我要考的学校和老师的范围缩小了一大半。
平时，我在大学教书上班之余，自己也会买一些专业书籍看看。而在这中间，有一位老师的研究立场和学术观点尤其令我佩服。在仔细阅读了他的几篇文章之后，就情不自禁的把他所有发表过的论文都找来读了一遍，并生出一种醍醐灌顶的感觉，觉得学者写文章就应该有这样的学术立场和思想深度。在扩展理解了一下这位老师的其他基本情况后，发现他全部符合我的上述三大标准，因此我很快决定将这位老师作为考博的对象。
但是我与这位老师素不相识，也没有什么师兄师姐可以引荐。思来想去，最后我决定采取最笨或最简单的方法，就是直接给老师写信，谈我的学术理念以及我为什么要考他的博士。
还好，这位老师很快给我回了信，欢迎我报考。由于这个学校向来不对外公布考博真题，所以我只能从阅读这位老师和他其他同事的论文和著作入手，准备考试。
这一考，就考了好几次。其中印象最深刻的一次就是专业课考了最高分，但是因为好久不参加考试了(都监考别人去了)，导致时间没把握好，英语试卷没做完，最终考博的英语成绩没达到学校英语分数线。但是不管怎么样，失败的次数虽然有好几次，经验却是一点点的积累起来了，对这个学校的考试内容和考试风格有了比较深的了解。最后，天随人愿，靠着坚持，最终还是获得了这所顶尖高校的博士录取通知书。
