Lesson 1: A private conversation

In this lesson, we are introduced to a conversation between two friends, Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Carter. They are sitting in a crowded train compartment and are trying to talk to each other despite the noise. Mrs. Carter, who has a hearing problem, finds it difficult to understand what Mrs. Jackson is saying.

The conversation starts with Mrs. Jackson asking Mrs. Carter if she had a good journey. Mrs. Carter, misunderstanding her friend due to her hearing difficulties, replies by saying that she did not have a good breakfast. This confusion continues throughout the conversation, with Mrs. Carter constantly misunderstanding Mrs. Jackson's questions and responding with unrelated answers.

The author uses this conversation to highlight the challenges faced by individuals with hearing difficulties in noisy environments. Despite their best efforts to communicate, Mrs. Carter and Mrs. Jackson struggle to understand each other. The noise of the train compartment serves as a metaphor for the challenges faced by individuals with hearing impairments in daily life.

Through this lesson, we can also learn the importance of patience and understanding when communicating with someone who has a hearing problem. Mrs. Jackson patiently repeats her questions and tries to make herself understood, showing empathy and consideration towards her friend.

This lesson serves as a reminder to appreciate the power of effective communication and to be mindful of the challenges faced by those with hearing impairments. It encourages us to be patient, understanding, and accommodating when communicating with individuals who may have difficulty hearing.

In conclusion, Lesson 1 of the New Concept English Second Edition teaches us about the challenges faced by individuals with hearing impairments in noisy environments. It emphasizes the importance of patience, understanding, and effective communication when interacting with those who have hearing difficulties. By being mindful and considerate, we can foster better communication and create a more inclusive society for everyone.

Lesson 1 A private conversation
Last week I went to the theatre. I had a very good seat. The play was very interesting. I did not enjoy it. A young man and a young woman were sitting behind me. They were talking loudly. I got very angry. I could not hear the actors. I turned round. I looked at the man and the woman angrily. They did not pay any attention. In the end, I could not bear it. I turned round again. ‘I can't hear a word!’ I said angrily.
‘It's none of your business, ’ the young man said rudely. ‘This is a private conversation!’
Notes on the text
1 go to the theatre,
2 got angry,
4 pay attention,注意。
5 I could not bear it.
6 none of your business,

1.Last week I went to the theatre.
课文中go to the theatre = go to the theatre to see a play,即去剧场看戏。类似的还有go to the cinema = go to the cinema to see a film(去电*看电影)。
go to school上学
go to bed上床,睡觉
go to church上教堂,去做礼拜(cf.第1册第68课at school, at church;第1册第85课have been to school/church)
2.had a very good seat,
the front seat of a car汽车的前座
Take a seat, please.
3.The play was very interesting.
This is an interesting book/idea.
4.…were sitting behind me. They were talking loudly.……
5.I got very angry.
而I was very angry则仅表示当时的状态是生气,并不暗示过程。
6.in the end,
She tried hard to finish her homework by herself. In the end, she had to ask her brother for help.
7.none of your business,
It is my business to look after your health.
This is none of his business.
(2)表示否定的代词none意义上相当于not any或no one,但语气较强:
She kept none of his letters.
None of my friends left early.
None of your silly remarks!
8.a private conversation,
在西方文化中人们对private(私人的,个人的)这个概念很看重。 所以课文中的小伙子会振振有词地说“This is a private conversation!”
Grammar in use
(Word order in simple statements)
动词必须与主语“一致”,所以主语决定动词的单复数形式(如I am, you are, he has)。
Last night Lucy went to the theatre.
I heard a voice at the door just now.
Sam listened to the story quietly.
The man ran away quickly.
