端午节(The Dragon Boat Festival)
The Dragon Boat Festival
The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is one of the traditional Chinese festivals. It is celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th month in the lunar calendar, which usually falls in June of the Gregorian calendar. The festival is famous for commemorating Qu Yuan, an ancient Chinese poet. Qu Yuan was a patriotic poet who drowned himself in the river in 278 BC to protest against the corrupt government of that time. In order to commemorate him, grand celebrations are held every year on the 5th day of the 5th month.
The Dragon Boat Festival has many unique traditional customs. One of the most well-known customs is the dragon boat race. Dragon boat racing is an ancient sport originated from the farming culture in southern China. Teams of rowers paddle in unison to propel the boat forward as fast as possible to cross the finish line. Spectators cheer for the teams, creating a lively atmosphere. In addition, people also eat zongzi on the Dragon Boat Festival. Zongzi is a traditional food made of glutinous rice. It is usually wrapped in bamboo leaves and filled with various ingredients such as red bean paste, pork, or salted egg yolk. Eating zongzi is believed to dispel evil spirits and protect one's health.
Apart from dragon boat races and eating zongzi, there are other celebratory activities during the Dragon Boat Festival. For example, some regions hang mugwort leaves and branches at their doorways as a way to ward off evil spirits. There is also a custom called "hanging mugwort," where people bundle mugwort into bunches and hang them at doorways or inside rooms to drive away evil spirits. Additionally, people wear colorful silk handkerchiefs, which are considered as talismans to ward off evil spirits.
In conclusion, the Dragon Boat Festival is a Chinese festival filled with traditional culture and customs. People celebrate the festival by participating in dragon boat races, eating zongzi, and engaging in various other activities to commemorate the poet Qu Yuan and pray for peace and happiness.

Some holidays are so much fun that they catch on outside of their culture. The most obvious example is probably Christmas, which is celebrated around the world by people who aren’t even Christian. Similarly, in recent years, the Dragon Boat Festival has moved beyond China to become an international holiday celebrated by people who may know little about the holiday’s origins。
The Dragon Boat Festival is one of three major Chinese holidays, along with the Spring and Moon Festivals. Of the three, it is possibly the oldest, dating back to the Warring States Period in 227 B.C. The festival commemorates Qu Yuan, a minister in the service of the Chu Emperor. Despairing over corruption at court, Qu threw himself into a river. Townspeople jumped into their boats and tried in vain to save him. Then, hoping to distract hungry fish from his body, the people scattered rice on the water。
Over the years, the story of Qu’s demise transformed into the traditions of racing dragon boats and eating zongzi – a kind of rice wrapped in bamboo leaves. The races have certainly captured the imagination of people from all over the world. Every spring there are nearly 60 dragon boat races held outside of China in cities from Vancouver to Sydney, from Gdańsk, Poland to Cape Town, South Africa. Canada alone has nearly 50 dragon boat teams and Germany has nearly 30。
So what is it about the Dragon Boat Festival that appeals to foreigners? “It’s an unusual sport,” says one racer from Germany. “It’s not like everybody’s doing it. That’s on
e of the reasons that there’s such great team spirit in a dragon boat team – everybody feels like we’re doing something special。” And what about the zongzi? “Ehhh, they’re not bad, I guess,” he says. “Something of an acquired taste. I just haven’t really acquired it yet。”
