篇一:The Origin and Customs of Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar. It has a history of over 2,000 years and is one of the most important festivals in China. The festival is named after the dragon boat races that are held during the celebration.

The origin of the Dragon Boat Festival dates back to the Warring States period in ancient China. It is said that the festival commemorates the death of Qu Yuan, a famous poet and statesman during the Chu kingdom. Qu Yuan was known for his patriotism and his commitment to fighting against corruption. However, his efforts were in vain, and he was exiled by the king. Feeling hopeless, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River on the 5th day of the 5th month.

The local people were devastated by the news of Qu Yuan's death. They admired his integrity and respected him as a hero. In an attempt to prevent fish and evil spirits from devouring Qu Yuan's body, the villagers threw sticky rice dumplings, known as zongzi, into the river. They also rowed their boats to search for his body, banging drums and splashing water with their paddles to scare away the creatures in the river.

Over time, these activities evolved into the dragon boat races that we see today. Dragon boats are long and narrow boats decorated like dragons, with a drummer at the bow to set the pace and a steersman at the stern to guide the boat. The races are held in rivers, lakes, and even the sea, with teams competing against each other to reach the finish line first.

Apart from dragon boat races, the Dragon Boat Festival is also known for its special food and traditions. Zongzi, the sticky rice dumplings, are the most iconic food of the festival. They are made by wrapping glutinous rice and various fillings such as beans, meat, or nuts in bamboo leaves and then steaming or boiling them. Eating zongzi during the festival is believed to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits.

In addition to zongzi, people also hang up pouches of herbs, called xiong huang, and wear colorful silk threads to ward off evil spirits and diseases. Children often wear colorful silk threads around their wrists, ankles, or necks to protect themselves from evil spirits.

The Dragon Boat Festival is not only a time for celebration but also an opportunity for families to come together and honor their ancestors. It is a time to remember the great poet Qu Yuan and to appreciate the traditions and customs that have been passed down through generations.
