High School Dragon Boat Festival English Essay 1

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday that is celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar. It is a day to commemorate the great poet Qu Yuan and to ward off evil spirits. In this essay, I will share the customs and traditions of the Dragon Boat Festival.

One of the most iconic traditions of the Dragon Boat Festival is the dragon boat races. Teams of rowers paddle in sync to the beat of a drum, racing against each other in long narrow boats decorated like dragons. The races are not only a thrilling spectacle to watch but also a test of teamwork and physical strength. Winning the race is seen as a great honor, and many participants train rigorously for months leading up to the festival.

Another important custom of the Dragon Boat Festival is the eating of zongzi. Zongzi are sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves, filled with various ingredients such as meats, beans, or nuts. The process of making zongzi is labor-intensive and requires skill. Families often gather together to make zongzi, enjoying the time spent together and passing down the tradition to younger generations.

Aside from dragon boat races and zongzi, the Dragon Boat Festival is also associated with the practice of wearing colorful silk threads and hanging up pouches filled with herbs. These rituals are believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. It is common to see people wearing silk threads around their wrists or tying them to their front doors.

In conclusion, the Dragon Boat Festival is a vibrant and festive holiday that celebrates Chinese culture and traditions. The dragon boat races, the eating of zongzi, and the various customs associated with the festival all contribute to its rich and meaningful celebrations. It is a time for families to come together, for communities to bond, and for people to experience the excitement and joy of this traditional holiday.

High School Dragon Boat Festival English Essay 2

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a significant holiday in China that is celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar. It is a time for people to pay tribute to Qu Yuan, a great poet, and to enjoy various customs and activities. In this essay, I will discuss the historical background and the cultural significance of the Dragon Boat Festival.

The Dragon Boat Festival originated from the legend of Qu Yuan, a famous poet and statesman who lived during the Warring States period. Qu Yuan was known for his loyalty and patriotism, but he was eventually banished by the king he served. Filled with despair, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River. The local people, who admired and respected him, desperately tried to save him by racing their boats and throwing rice dumplings into the river to prevent the fish from eating his body.

Over time, the actions of the local people evolved into the dragon boat races and the eating of zongzi, which are now the main customs of the Dragon Boat Festival. These traditions are not only a way to remember Qu Yuan but also a way to honor his sacrifice and to protect against evil spirits.

The Dragon Boat Festival holds great cultural significance in China. It is a time for people to come together, to strengthen community bonds, and to promote traditional values such as unity, loyalty, and respect for ancestors. It is also a time for families to pass down the customs and traditions to younger generations, ensuring that the festival’s rich history and cultural heritage are preserved.

In conclusion, the Dragon Boat Festival is a time-honored holiday that carries historical significance and cultural value in China. The traditions of dragon boat races and the eating of zongzi not only pay tribute to Qu Yuan but also serve as a reminder of the importance of unity, loyalty, and respect for one's culture and heritage. The festival brings people together and fosters a sense of community and tradition, making it a cherished and meaningful celebration.
