国外学者对《看不见的人》这部小说的主人公成长的研究还未专门涉及，国内学者对《看不见的人》的研究主要侧重于他的民族身份以及主人公的`个性觉醒方面，例如唐晓钟的《文化冲突中寻求真正的存在-拉尔夫·埃里森〈看不见的人〉创作简论》也对《看不见的人》的找寻自我及存在方面提出了自己的观点和见解。但是关于这部小说的主人公的成长的研究却很少专门涉及。
